Wanstead Flats is a large green open space in East London bordering the areas of Forest Gate, Manor Park, Leytonstone, Aldersbrook and Wanstead. It is the most southern part of Epping Forest and is adminstered by the Corporation of London.
It is a very popular park used by the whole community for a whole range of recreational activities including walking, horse riding, picnics, football, cricket, jogging, cycling and model aeroplanes.
It is also important as a wildlife reserve, with a wide range of birds including woodpeckers, owls and a substantial skylark nesting area. There are also rare funghi and an assortment of wild flowers.
This community website is being developed by the Friends of Wanstead Flats to provide information on the park and to provide a focal point for the local community to be involved in some of the issues concerned with protecting Wanstead Flats as a valuable green open space.
For this website to work to its full potential, we would welcome contributions from people who have a knowledge of the area, its legal status, its history (historical photos can be scanned and uploaded) wildlife, biodiversity so that we can provide a whole picture of it.
